Accessibility
What we are aiming for, what we have not verified, and how to order if the site gets in your way.
Last updated
We want the shop to be usable by as many people as possible, including anyone using a screen reader, a keyboard rather than a mouse, magnification, or a browser set to their own colours and text size. That is partly a legal duty and mostly just what a shop should be.
No audit has been carried out
Read this before the rest of the page. This site has not been through an independent accessibility audit, and it has not been tested with disabled people or with assistive technology beyond ordinary development checks. So nothing below is a conformance claim, and we are not going to put a badge on this page that nobody has earned. Both the audit and the user testing are planned; neither has happened.
The standard we are aiming for
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, at level AA. That is the bar UK public bodies are held to and the sensible one for a retailer. It is what decisions on this site are measured against — an aim, not an achievement, until somebody independent says otherwise.
What we have tried to get right
These are deliberate choices in how the site is built, not verified results. If one of them is not working for you, it is a bug and we want to hear about it:
- Every page should work with the keyboard alone, with the focus outline always visible. It has not been removed for tidiness anywhere.
- Headings run in order and describe the page, so a screen reader's heading list works as a table of contents.
- Body text is set to meet or exceed a 4.5:1 contrast ratio, and the coloured chips and tiles are designed against a 7:1 target.
- Text should resize and reflow to 200% without anything being cut off or needing sideways scrolling.
- Product photography carries alternative text. Decorative artwork is hidden from screen readers rather than described pointlessly.
- Nothing moves, flashes or plays by itself. Interface animation is short, tied to something you did, and switched off entirely when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Form fields have real labels, and an error says what is wrong in words rather than turning the box red.
Gaps we already know about
- Product photography comes from our suppliers and some of the alternative text is still generic. We are rewriting it aisle by aisle.
- Safety data sheets are supplier PDFs and are not all tagged for screen readers. Ask and we will send you the content in a format that works for you.
- Parts of the shop — the basket, checkout and accounts — are still being built, so nothing on this page has been checked against them yet.
If the site is getting in your way
Call 01902 000 118 between 8am and 5pm on a working day and we will take the order over the phone, read you prices, or email a quote — no account needed and no difference in price. If email suits you better, use the contact form or write to hello@provenience.co.uk.
Telling us about a problem
If you hit something that does not work we want to know, and one line is plenty — the page you were on and what happened. We aim to reply within one working day and to say plainly whether we can fix it, when, and what to do meanwhile.
